Buckingham United Res. 4 - 3 Brackley Sports Res.

Admin 217 Nov 2016 - 20:59

A thrilling comeback saw United reserves topple Brackley Sports Reserves.

This time the woodwork diverted the ball into the net and United had their equaliser. Game on.

Ant Weight's Reserve side hosted Brackley Sports Reserves at Lace Hill off the back of a convincing win at Westbury, and were hoping to secure maximum points.

The game couldn't have started more badly for Buckingham however - from the first set piece of the match Brackley scrambled the ball home, and soon after following defensive disarray Brackley added a second following a similar goalmouth scramble. A bad start to say the least.

United looked on the rocks and it looked like it could be one of those days, but Ant Weight shifted Karl Sear into midfield to join James Hayden-Watts and Jack Stuchbury, and this proved to be an inspired switch. The midfield three beginning to win their battles and move the ball around and test the Brackley defence.

The running of Neil Hailstone on the wing was also constant menace, and it was from the wing that Buckingham got their goal. Buckingham worked the ball patiently into Brackley's box and young Jonathan Ackroyd popped up with a sublime finish to reduce the deficit.

Buckingham were unlucky not to draw level following a period of pressure, when against the run of play Brackley forced a set piece. The ball was whipped in flat across the defence, and James Hayden-Watts managed to beat everybody else to the ball. Unfortunately for Buckingham he could only flick the ball into his own net and Buckingham were 2 goals down again.

The attitude of the United players was spot on however - they wanted the win this game, it was clear to see. Ackroyd in particular was a constant threat, looking to get at the Brackley defence and was winning a lot of fouls. Buckingham finally punished Brackley's inability to fairly challenge Ackroyd when captain Karl Sear's thunderbolt free kick flew into the top corner of the net from an unlikely angle. Game on.

At 3-2, with half-time approaching Buckingham were dominating and Jack Stuchbury was inches away from equalising. The attacking midfielder picked the ball up from a Brackley clearance, shifted past a defender onto his left foot and from 30 yards arrowed a drive against the crossbar. Devastatingly close to an equaliser - but it wasn't to be, and Buckingham sent in 3-2 down at the break.

Buckingham instantly pilled on pressure in the second half - Ackroyd, Jones and Hailstone were stretching the defence as Sear, Hayden-Watts and Stuchbury simultaneously dominated the middle. Bucks defence of Billy Jones, Ben Oxley, Mark Smith and Dan Hunt looked accomplished in front of Andy Whitehead in goal and the boys in blue and white had a real belief that victory was achievable.

Bucks dominance was clear, and Ackroyd won another free kick within minutes of the restart. Sear stepped up to take the set piece again, this time whipping a perfect ball to the back post where Jack Stuchbury's diving header looped onto the far post. Luckily for Stuchbury, this time the woodwork diverted the ball into the net and United had their equaliser.

The game became a tight affair following the equaliser, and stayed a stalemate for a good fifteen minutes - the United defence held firm amid the pressure thought, and definitely looked the steadier of the two defences with the match in the balance. This allowed Bucks to pile on the pressure and try to secure the 3 points.

Ackroyd, a constant spark got the wrong side of his man in the Brackley box, and tried to flick the ball and run onto it to shiot - unfortunately for Brackley, their defender kicked Ackroyd in the head. A clear penalty.

Ackroyd stepped up for the spot kick, and it seemed as if this would be a vital kick in the game. Ackroyd kept his cool though, tucking neatly into the bottom corner to give Buckingham the lead with fifteen minutes to go. There were lots of tired legs following the sheer effort to get back in the driving seat of the game, and this allowed Weight to make a number of changes. Each substitution did themselves justice, and made a valuable contribution to closing the game down successfully, as the game finished 4-3 to Buckingham.

A rousing comeback for United's Reserves. Next up Yardley Gobian at Lace hill on Saturday 29th November. 14:00 k.o.
